Padel & Friends

https://www.padelandfriends.com

VESA x Padel & Friends

In an exciting development for the local padel community, Padel & Friends has announced the appointment of Jorge Vila Jr as their new Director of Padel. With a wealth of experience and a deep passion for the sport, Vila Jr is set to enhance the club's offerings, fostering growth and engagement among players of all levels. His leadership is anticipated to bring innovative programs and events, further establishing Padel & Friends as a premier destination for padel enthusiasts.

Padel is a dynamic racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, played on an enclosed court smaller than a traditional tennis court. Typically enjoyed in doubles, players use solid, perforated rackets to hit a ball similar to a tennis ball but with slightly less pressure. The game begins with an underhand serve, and players can strategically use the surrounding glass and metal mesh walls to play rebounds, adding a unique dimension to the sport. Scoring in padel mirrors that of tennis, making it familiar to enthusiasts of traditional racket sports.

Marshes Pickleball

VESA x Marshes PB

This summer, VESA is running the pickleball programs at The Marshes Golf Course, and we couldn’t be more excited! With eight outdoor courts set in a beautiful location, it’s the perfect place to get out and play. We’ll be offering a range of exciting programs for players of all levels, including lessons, tournaments, and events. Whether you’re looking to learn, improve, or just enjoy a fun game with friends, we’ve got something for everyone. It’s shaping up to be an amazing summer of pickleball, and we can’t wait to see you on the courts!

CFMWS x VESA

We had the great pleasure to be part of the Champions Program for CFMWS, an amazing initiative that gives kids from military families the chance to stay active and try out different sports. Thanks to the funding from the OSEG Foundation, we were able to run sessions at the RA Centre and introduce the kids to many different sports. Some of the sports we taught were floor hockey, badminton, tennis, soccer, pickleball, and many more. A big highlight was having Ottawa RedBlacks and Ottawa Charge players come out to join in, play with the kids, and share their experiences as athletes. Seeing the excitement and energy was incredible, and it was clear how much this program meant to the kids. VESA is proud to be part of a program that brings communities together through sport, and we are looking forward to future collaborations! Big thanks to Joel & Catherine for their leadership.

Ottawa Beach Tennis

Excited for another season of sun, sand and smashes at the Ottawa Tennis Club! This year we’ve expanded our offering to a popular Friday night matchplay under the lights. There’s no better way to end the week than to get together and play BT with friends. We will also be hosting a ITF BT10 Tournament on July 12th & 13th, come watch some of the best players in Canada and abroad compete.

Are you ready for another exciting year of tennis in Montreal?

Our Annual NBO Day trip to Montreal is happening. Sit back and relax on the bus, you don't have to worry about parking or driving there. Last year the trip was amazing, some intense matches and practice sessions. From Sabalenka, to our own Gabby Dabrowski hitting some missiles of forehands and backhands. We even had the chance to watch Leylah Fernandez. This year ATP takes over Montreal and many of the top players are expected to be there: Alcaraz, Ruud, Fritz, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, De Minaur, and don't forget Shapovalov and Felix. We hope to see you there!

Health & Wellness

As we transition to outdoor tennis, it’s much easier to find space & time to stretch after our sessions. Not only does it feel great, but your body will recover faster and will be ready for the next time on court. Follow this beginner (post-match) flexibility routine.

Danielle Collins and Grigor Dimitrov: Age-Defying Triumphs at the Miami Open

Danielle Collins: A Fairytale Farewell

Danielle Collins, the 30-year-old American, etched her name in tennis history during the Miami Open. In her farewell season, she achieved one of her major goals: winning her first-ever WTA 1000 event. Collins, who battled health issues including rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis, stunned the tennis world by defeating No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina in the final. Her powerful hitting and unwavering determination made her the lowest-ranked woman ever to win the Miami Open. The crowd’s enthusiastic support made her feel like she was “playing in front of thousands of my best friends”, as she became the sixth American woman to claim this prestigious title.

Grigor Dimitrov: A Backhand Renaissance

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov has orchestrated a remarkable comeback at the Miami Open. His journey to the final included impressive victories over top players. First, he upset top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, securing his first win over a top-five player in nearly five years. Dimitrov’s elegant one-handed backhand, a rarity in today’s game, has been his secret weapon. His thrilling semifinal win against Alexander Zverev showcased his resilience and shot-making ability. By reaching the final, Dimitrov not only secured his return to the ATP Top 10 rankings but also heralded the resurgence of the single-handed backhand.

Lessons for Tennis Enthusiasts

  1. Passion Knows No Age: Both Collins and Dimitrov exemplify that love for the game transcends chronological age. Their unwavering commitment and hunger for victory fuel their success.

  2. Health Challenges Can’t Diminish Determination: Despite facing health setbacks, Collins and Dimitrov continue to compete at the highest level. Their resilience inspires us all.

  3. Back to Basics: Dimitrov’s classic one-handed backhand reminds us that sometimes simplicity and tradition hold the key to excellence.

As the Miami Open unfolds, let us celebrate these age-defying champions who prove that tennis is not just a sport—it’s a timeless pursuit of greatness.

In case you missed it, a quick holiday message from the VESA Team!

Wrists play a crucial role in tennis: often overlooked, they provide stability and touch. They are also an essential part in generating power and spin in shots, controlling ball direction, and increasing racquet acceleration. It’s important to keep them healthy and mobile, here’s a video with exercises you can do from home.

Knowing when and how to breathe will improve your endurance, reduce swing effort and provide more clarity under pressure. Watch the video above and follow the link for more: Breathing in Tennis

Health & Wellness

In this month’s edition of health & wellness, we are doing a spotlight on one of the most important joints for tennis players - the hips. Tight hips will decrease your ability to hit through your shots, cause stress on the lower back, and therefore compensate with the shoulder or elbow. Try these 3 exercises before you go on court, they will make you say “hip hip hooray!”.

Coach Dan has developed a strength & mobility program for tennis players. Invest time during the indoor season to take care of the body (and mind) from the comfort of your own home. More details coming soon…

New Babolat frames are in!

We’ve just received a new shipment from our friends at Babolat Canada. Demo racquets for the Pure AERO Team, Pure AERO 100 and Pure AERO 98. We have racquets from the Pure STRIKE and Pure DRIVE lineup as well. Reach out to one of the VESA team members if you’d like try any of these frames for free.

We’re working hard to bring you updates/content that is both useful and practical. If there are other areas you’d like us to cover or expand on - please let us know, we’d love to hear from you! Send an email to info@vesaconsulting.org 📥

VESA LAVER CUP 2023 TRIP ✈️

This yearly premier tennis event comes to Canada for the first time! 3 days of high-quality tennis between Team World vs Team Europe. Many legends of our sport in attendance including Rod Laver, Roger Federer, John McEnroe & Bjorn Borg. A quick 4.5 hr flight from YOW to YVR, we arrived the night before the start of the event. Assembled the crew and make our way to the Rogers Arena, home of the Vancouver Canucks. We were very impressed by the logistics and organization of the event, accessible by train/car, short queues, reasonably priced food/beverages, as well as top-notch audio/video.

In regards to the tennis, there were some high-quality matches on display. Match highlights: Ruud vs Tommy Paul, Hurkacz/Monfils vs FAA/Shelton, Hurkacz/Rublev vs Tiafoe/Shelton. The interview with Roger Federer by Jim Courier was quite entertaining as well. In the end, Team World dominated with individual and team performances by a score of 13-2. Next stop…Berlin 2024 🔜 🇩🇪

Join us for the last event of 2023!

Ankle mobility

Exercises for tennis players

How to cope with disappointment in sport

Whether you are a competing in tournaments or playing recreationally at your club, it’s important to understand the challenges (physical and/or mental) that you’ll face along the way. It can be a tough loss, nagging injury or simply frustrated with your progress - they can all contribute to an unpleasant experience. We are here to help by providing resources and scientifically proven methods.

In recent years, there’s been a greater acknowledgment and awareness towards mental health in sport. Which not only affects professional athletes, but also club players and everything in between. In 2022, Tennis Canada launched the Mental Health Timeout, an initiative to continue to improve the well-being of all individuals in the sports community and be an agent of change. The ambassadors for 2023 are Bianca Andreescu, Alex Galarneau & Rob Shaw.

In this article, Dr. Kevin Chapman (PhD - Clinical Psychologist & Founder of The Kentucky Center of Anxiety and Related Disorders) shares ways to cope with — and move beyond — disappointment.

Closing remarks

We want to remind everyone that we will not be conducting private coaching sessions this winter at RSC. They are heading in a new direction and wouldn’t come to terms with us on a new contract. We are confident this temporary pause will allow us to shift our focus on further improving our offerings for 2024 and beyond. Looking forward to seeing you at the end of season event!

All strung up… Part #2 🤪

Strings / racquet advice from the experts…

Equipment / tip of the month

String tension in tennis plays a crucial role in determining a player's performance and feel on the court. String tension refers to the tightness of the strings in a tennis racket.

⁃ Higher tension provides more control and precision in shots, making it ideal for players who generate a lot of power naturally.

⁃ Lower tension offers increased power and a more forgiving response, suitable for players seeking extra depth and spin in their shots.

⁃ Choosing the right string tension involves considering individual playing style, skill level, and racket characteristics. Advanced players often prefer higher tensions to maximize control, while beginners and intermediate players might benefit from lower tensions to aid in shot consistency. Experimenting with different string tensions can help players fine-tune their game to find the perfect balance between power and control for optimal performance on the tennis court. All strung up 🤪

Strings / racquet advice from the experts…

Equipment / Tip of the month

Knowing when to replace tennis strings is essential for tennis players to maintain optimal performance and prevent injuries. Generally, tennis strings should be replaced when they lose their tension, which typically occurs after 10-20 hours of play. However, this can vary depending on the player's style, frequency of play, and string material.

⁃ Natural gut strings offer excellent playability and comfort but are less durable and may need replacement sooner.

⁃ Synthetic gut strings provide a good balance of playability and durability and are suitable for many players.

⁃ Polyester strings are more durable and offer control but can be stiffer on the arm.

⁃ Hybrid setups, where different strings are used for the main and cross strings, can also be employed to customize the feel and performance.

Regardless of the string type, staying attentive to the string's condition will help tennis players make the most of their game and avoid unnecessary issues on the court.

Tennis in Canada 🎾🇨🇦

VESA | July Newsletter

The history of tennis in Canada is richer than we think and it reflects the nation's deep passion for the sport. Tennis was first introduced to Canada with the formation of the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association (now Tennis Canada) in 1890.

Over the years, Canadian players have made their mark on the international tennis stage, achieving remarkable successes. Fast forward to the 21st century, and Canada's tennis scene has witnessed a renaissance, thanks to the rise of remarkable talents like Milos Raonic, Eugenie Bouchard, Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Alliasime, Leylah Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu.

These players have not only achieved significant rankings and tournament victories but have also inspired a new generation of tennis enthusiasts across the country. Today, Canada proudly hosts prestigious tournaments such as the Rogers Cup, showcasing top-level international tennis on Canadian soil. The Crucial role of choosing the right shoes for optimal performance - By Jorge Jr

When it comes to playing tennis, having the right equipment is essential. While rackets and balls receive considerable attention, one often overlooked component that greatly impacts a player's performance is tennis shoes. Purchasing the correct tennis shoes tailored to the specific needs of the sport can make a significant difference in terms of comfort, support, stability, and injury prevention. In this article, we will explore the importance of buying the right tennis shoes and how they contribute to a player's overall game.

1.- Enhanced Performance

Tennis is a demanding sport that requires quick lateral movements, sudden stops, and rapid changes in direction. The proper tennis shoes provide the necessary traction on the court, allowing players to move swiftly and effectively. Shoes designed explicitly for tennis are crafted with durable outsoles, optimized patterns, and materials that offer excellent grip on various court surfaces, enhancing a player's ability to react swiftly and maintain balance during intense rallies.

2.- Optimal Comfort

Comfort plays a vital role in a player's performance and overall enjoyment of the game. Tennis shoes designed with cushioning systems, such as gel or foam, offer superior shock absorption, reducing the strain on joints and muscles. The right shoe size and fit are equally important, as ill-fitting shoes can lead to blisters, foot pain, and discomfort, ultimately hindering a player's performance on the court.

3.- Injury Prevention

The repetitive movements and high-impact nature of tennis can place considerable stress on the feet, ankles, and lower body. Investing in tennis shoes that provide excellent ankle support and stability can help prevent common injuries, such as ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, and stress fractures. Look for shoes with reinforced sides, sturdy heel counters, and supportive midsoles to minimize the risk of injuries and keep you on the court for longer periods.

4.- Durability and Longevity (Playing Surface)

Tennis shoes are specifically designed to withstand the rigorous demands of the sport. They are constructed with durable materials and reinforced in areas prone to wear and tear, such as the toe box and outsole. Choosing high-quality tennis shoes may require a larger initial investment, but they will last longer, saving you money in the long run and ensuring consistent performance throughout their lifespan. Also choosing the right shoe for the type of surface you play the most.

5.- Personalized Fit and Style:

Every player has unique foot characteristics and playing styles. Tennis shoes come in a variety of designs, widths, and support options to cater to individual needs. Whether you have wide or narrow feet, high or low arches, or prefer a particular style, selecting tennis shoes that provide a personalized fit will enhance your comfort and confidence on the court.

Conclusion:

Selecting the right tennis shoes is an investment in your performance, comfort, and overall well-being as a tennis player. By choosing shoes specifically designed for tennis, you can optimize your performance, prevent injuries, and ensure durability for prolonged use. Remember to consider factors such as traction, comfort, support, and fit when purchasing tennis shoes, and don't hesitate to seek advice from professionals or experienced players to make an informed decision. With the right tennis shoes, you'll be better equipped to conquer the court and elevate your game to new heights.

And as far as style you know that I am guilty of that. I like my colorful shoes and have been using the same model for years.
